Shirley and Warren, 1940s

Family Origins

Long before they became Hollywood legends, Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty were simply Shirley and Warren Beaty, growing up in Richmond, Virginia. Their parents, Kathlyn Corinne MacLean, a drama teacher from Nova Scotia, and Ira Owens Beaty, a public school administrator, encouraged creativity from an early age. The 1950 U.S. Census captures the future stars living at home together as teenagers, years before either had entered show business.

Although they shared the surname Beaty, each chose a different professional identity. Shirley honored her mother's maiden name, becoming Shirley MacLaine, while Warren simply added a second "t," becoming Beatty.

In the early 1950s, Shirley first pursued ballet before a Broadway opportunity changed her life. When an injured chorus member stepped aside during The Pajama Game, MacLaine stepped into the role and was quickly discovered by Hollywood. In 1954, she married businessman and producer Steve Parker, and two years later welcomed their daughter, Sachi Parker. Sachi would later become an actress and author, publishing the memoir Lucky Me, an often candid look at growing up with one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Warren followed his older sister into acting just a few years later, earning his breakthrough opposite Natalie Wood in Splendor in the Grass. While he first gained fame in front of the camera, Beatty soon became one of Hollywood's most influential producers, writers, and directors. During the filming of Bugsy (1991), he met Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening. They married the following year and raised four children: Stephen, Ben, Isabel, and Ella. Three of the siblings have pursued careers in entertainment, with Ella emerging as one of the family's newest faces on screen.
